Missoni For Target

by Penny on September 13, 2011

Oh my, I was not expecting such craziness with the launch of the Missoni collection at Target.

In fact, I had forgotten that today was the day until I got on the road. Tate has been sick and was up all night with a fever, so I am operating on very little sleep and energy. Midway through my commute, I realized that the collection was launching today and Target was about to open. So, I stopped off the freeway and entered into a totally calm scene. No one else was around at first, and soon there were about 6-10 women shopping.

I have heard such horror stories about people’s behavior! At the store I visited, I was pointing women toward the different sections (everything was split up by category) and we were all just….happy. No one was hoarding, and certainly no one was pushing/yelling–who does that? That behavior is exactly why I avoid sample sales.

In any case, I picked up a lot of things! Below are a few–I had actually pulled these for a post a few weeks ago, and never got around to writing it!

I grabbed both the robe (it was at the top of my list) and nightie.

missoni5

The shawls (I was mistaken, they are not ponchos!) were great, I got both colors. The totes were tempting, but the handles were too stiff and I can’t stand bags that will not stay on my shoulder, especially for travel.

missoni3I got the long cardigan but skipped the heels. But they are SO CUTE. The tights are also very sweet.

missoni1Of course, I couldn’t pass up the flats. I also grabbed some wellies.

missoni7I snagged a roller suitcase (there was only one of each color out) and saw three women pedaling the bikes around the store! I completely missed the home section, and my opportunity to get a throw :-( Surprisingly, the flatware was totally sold out.

Did you make it out to a store this morning? Were you able to get onto the website before the multiple crashes? I was chatting with a coworker whose daughters live in NYC and they said it was impossible to even get near the pop-up shops–lookie here, it’s Betthany Frankel shopping at the Brooklyn Target.

I will tell you that the quality is markedly better than past GO collections, but the prices are also higher. The knits have a nice hand, although they are made of man-made fabric (what do you expect?). I will definitely be returning some things, but I will also be giving something away for a blog giveaway, so stay tuned! I may not post much any longer, but I do love me some giveaways.

Hope all is well!

Brithday Wish List

by Penny on August 20, 2011

My birthday is on October 25th, and I created a little treasury on Etsy to collect some things I am lusting after (aside from a plane ticket to NYC to visit my friends….hint hint).

il_570xN.213423750

Mac OS X shortcuts poster from Bird Ave. I can’t decide if I’d rather have this for my home office or office office. Maybe I will need two :-)

il_570xN.258362777

Okinawa lambskin bag from Valhalla Brooklyn. I’m in need of a new bag, and I am pretty much married to the shoulder/crossbody style. I love the loose chain handles.

il_570xN.253485252

Vintage mink caplet from Persephone Vintage. Super soft, beautiful color, and I love the proportion.

il_570xN.193798126

Wishbone necklace from Sora Designs. I think this is really fun, and I love the over-sized wishbone on the long, delicate chain.

Two Summer Salads { Seasonal Bounty }

by Penny on August 9, 2011

salads_1

Cherry tomatoes fresh from my aunt Sherrie’s garden. Bright, beautiful and pure summer.

I mentioned in a previous post that I love eating nectarines and tomatoes this time of year, so I’d like to share two of my favorite recipes showcasing the fruits, both salads. The first comes from my most thumbed through, post-it-tagged and splattered cookbook, Sunday Suppers at Lucques. I am certain I’ve mentioned it before, but you should buy this cookbook, Suzanne Goin is one of my culinary heroes.

salads_2
If you cannot find heirlooms, which are at their peak in August/September, choose the freshest and smallest tomatoes you can find–preferably from a home garden or farmers market. At the grocery store, pick up multi-colored cherry tomatoes and a few firm romas.

Her tomato salad highlights the heirloom tomatoes that are abundant this time of year, allowing them to shine alongside crusty toasted bread and cool, creamy burrata. It falls somewhere between panzanella and caprese. Burrata is fresh mozzarella with a creamy center. It can sometimes be hard to find, so feel free to substitute with the freshest mozzarella you can find (or, if you’re feeling ambitious, you can attempt to make burrata at home). If you are unable to get your hands on heirloom tomatoes, use cherry tomatoes or other smaller varieties. Skip the hothouse and large tomatoes, as they have a greater chance of having a mealy texture. I do make two modifications to the recipe–I omit the opal basil (I can never find it) and add thick slices of hothouse or Persian cucumbers. Because, everything is better with cucumbers.

This salad has its roots in the local, seasonal food movement that emerged out of Northern California with chefs like Alice Waters (who Goin worked under in her early days) and Judy Rodgers. It’s a perfect way to showcase heirlooms in the height of their season.

The second salad comes from another California chef, Tom Keller. Keller’s three most popular cookbooks pay homage to his Yountville restaurants–French Laundry, Bouchon and Ad Hoc. I’ve only been to Bouchon (and, hello, Bouchon Bakery–nom nom). I almost went to Ad Hoc once but I wasn’t feeling the menu that night (it’s fixed). French Laundry is just waaaaaay out of our price range. I do, however, own the Ad Hoc cookbook. I also owned the Bouchon and French Laundry books as well, but the former features too much (for my taste) heavy French-infused food and the latter is simply too ambitious for this home cook.

Ad Hoc has been a real pleasure, both the recipes and the layout design of the book are great. In it, you will find recipes for his famous fried chicken and lots of “extras” like various vinaigrette, jellies, mustards and infused oils. One of my favorite salads from the book features another summer favorite, nectarines; both in the vinaigrette and salad itself. It’s balanced with some peppery, slightly bitter greens and sweet almonds. I really encourage you, if it’s not in your pantry, to buy some sherry vinegar. It’s more subtle than red and balsamic vinegars. The recipe calls for Marcona almonds, but if you can’t get your hands on those, just use slivered almonds.

Each recipe serves 4-6. The tomato salad is pretty quick to pull together, while the nectarine salad requires a bit more prep work for the vinaigrette.

Heirloom Tomato Salad with Burrata, Torn Croutons and Basil

Adapted from Sunday Suppers at Lucques

salads_13

  • 1/2 large loaf bread (look for a crusty french bread)
  • 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 Tbsp fresh oregano leaves (or 2 tsp dried)
  • 1/2 large garlic clove
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 1/2 pint cherry tomatoes
  • 3 lbs heirloom tomatoes in assorted shapes, sizes and colors
  • 1 cup thickly sliced and quartered hothouse or Persian cucumbers (optional)
  • 1 tsp fleur de sel (or fleur de sal)
  • 4 Tbsp sliced basil
  • 1 lb burrata cheese (or other fresh mozzarella cheese)
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced shallots
  • 1/4 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves
  • kosher salt & black pepper

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Tear 1-2″ pieces of bread from the loaf (if you’d like, you can first remove crust, I like to keep it on). Toss into a large bowl and add 1/4 cup of the olive oil. Mix with your hands, allowing the oil to really soak into the bread. Spread onto a baking sheet and bake until golden brown.

Smash garlic clove and add oregano. Mix in vinegars. Slowly whisk in the remaining oil, add kosher salt and pepper to taste. Mix in basil. Reserve at room temperature.

Cut heirloom tomatoes into a mixture of thick slices and wedges. Slice shallots and cucumbers.

Compose tomatoes, cucumbers and shallots on a large platter or shallow bowl. Drizzle vinaigrette over the salad. Carefully layer in slices of burrata, croutons and parsley leaves. Sprinkle with fleur de sel.

salad_9

Torn croutons and burrata cheese. If you cannot find burrata cheese, you can order it online, but I recommend just using the freshest mozzarella you can get your hands on.

salads_4

Fleur de sel. A pricey, but wonderful addition to your pantry. See resources list below for online purchase options.

salads_12

Making the croutons ahead of time allows you to compose the salad (with no cooking) just before serving. It’s the perfect summer meal. Make sure you bring all ingredients to cool room temperature before serving.

Resource List:

Endive and Arugula Salad with Peaches and Almonds

Adapted from the Ad Hoc cookbook

salads_10

  • 6 heads Belgian endive (white, red or both)
  • 2 Tbsp nectarine puree (recipe below)
  • 1 Tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley
  • 1/4 cup sherry vinegar
  • 3/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 1/2 lbs ripe but firm nectarines
  • kosher salt & black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp minced chives
  • 2 cups arugula
  • 1/2 cup salted, roasted Marcona almonds (or roasted slivered almonds)

I take many liberties with Keller’s recipe for peach (in my case, nectarine) puree, choosing to skip the sieving step and allowing the puree to remain chunky. For a smoother puree, you can sieve the blended nectarines through a strainer.

Nectarine Puree

  • 2 very ripe nectarines
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • Grating of fresh nutmeg

If you are able to peel the skins off the nectarines, proceed. If not, dump them into a pot of boiling water for a minute or two to soften the skins and remove. Slice off as much fruit as possible into a blender. Blend until smooth. Combine puree and sugar in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Cook until thickened, then add cinnamon and nutmeg. The puree may be stored in the fridge for two months.

salads_5

Nectarines blended into a smooth puree. Use a blender or hand-held mixer.

Combine 2 tablespoons of the puree with the chopped parsley and sherry vinegar. Slowly whisk in olive oil, salt and pepper to taste and reserve at room temperature.

Cut off the base of each endive and allow the outermost leaves to fall off. Continue slicing into the base until all the leaves are loose.

Cut nectarines into small wedges. If using nuts, roast until brown.

Toss arugula with enough vinaigrette to just coat the greens. Do the same with the endive in a separate bowl. Spread arugula onto a large platter or shallow bowl and top with endive. Layer in nectarine wedges and sprinkle with almonds and snipped chives. If desired, add a bit of salt and/or pepper.

salads_6

The nectarine puree acts as a base for the vinaigrette.

salads_11

If you like to make your own vinaigrettes, invest in some sherry vinegar.

salads_7

If you cannot find sherry vinegar in your grocery store, see the resource list below to buy online.

  • Buy Marcona almonds online.
  • Visit Ad Hoc for dinner. Or buy the cookbook.

Bon appetit!

Happy Birthday Lucy

by Penny on August 6, 2011

I am sure it didn’t escape you that today is the 100th birthday of Lucille Ball. Google even changed their icon in honor of the day. I find that people tend to fall into three categories when it comes to Lucy–they absolutely love her, don’t know too much about her aside from some of the more iconic ILL moments, and those who find her grating and annoying. Thankfully that last group is very small :-)

I’ve watched I Love Lucy since I was a wee sprite. After Sesame Street it was one of the few shows I was allowed to watch. Growing up I was given books about Lucy on my birthday, I owned all the VHS tapes of the ILL series and, yes, I watched the TV movie. While the show is her most successful endeavor, as it should be, she also made some great movies (Yours, Mine & Ours and The Long Long Trailer being my favorites) and accomplished a great deal both professionally behind the camera and in her personal life.

Below is one of my favorite moments from I Love Lucy. It’s not as popular and well known, so I was only able to find one good video, that also has subtitles :-) This scene always cracks me up, I love the lisp.

Happy birthday Lucy, and thanks for the laughs.

Well, Hello There!

by Penny on August 5, 2011

Hi strangers….hope all is well and you’re enjoying the tail-end of your summer. Things have been really busy, and I am totally wiped out. Tate is growing fast and close to walking. He’s still a sweetheart but definitely developing some independence and willfulness. A few weeks ago, we took him swimming for the first time…

tateswims

He started off apprehensive, but soon got naked and smiled. I think I took 200 photos. But, I love you so I will spare you :-)

Tonight Todd is out with friends, Tate is sleeping and I am going to eat some dinner, try my best to watch the last Harry Potter movie (my dad and I are seeing the final one tomorrow), take a big old muscle relaxer or a handful of Melatonin and SLEEP. I am exhausted.

I received a comment a few weeks ago about our kitchen remodel:

I discovered your blog because of your kitchen remodel (we are in the process of a kitchen makeover using white Ikea cabinetry and I was looking for inspiration). I have enjoyed your blog very much since then, and I am sooooo looking forward to seeing some pictures of the completed kitchen project!

Unfortunately, the kitchen is still a work in progress and there are some loose ends to tie up–Todd and I have decided to hire someone to complete the small but time-consuming tasks, like touch-up painting. I can tell you that it’s gotten quite a lot of use and that I love it to pieces. My favorite element, by far, is our double-oven.

When we do finally wrap things up, I will take a bunch of photos and share :-) To refresh your memory:

In the meantime, some things I am currently loving…

Hunting for kitchen art…I’ve been eying Sandra Juto’s Moka print for years now, so I might as well buy it for our little coffee area. My mom had a vintage Grape Nuts poster hanging in our kitchen while I was growing up and I’ve always wanted to have my own–this beat up print is only 2 bucks! I totally love Grape Nuts! I don’t like art to be too themed and obvious, so I’d like to throw in some non-food/kitchen pieces. Laura Amiss is an artist I recently collaborated with at work and I love her style. Her city living print is my favorite. And…I bet you didn’t know that I’ve always had a thing for whales!

Peaches + Beth. I’m finally dragging my ass out to some live shows. Portishead at the Greek Theater…sometime in the fall, I can’t recall the date off the top of my head. Peaches released her North American DJ tour and she’s stopping at my favorite club in SF. I’m trying to get my friend and dancing partner Charley on board.

Thinking about a teeny tiny tattoo in honor of Tate…a halfpence (or, half penny).

I’ve only ever considered getting a tattoo in a few places–the nape of my neck, behind my left ear, on the underside of my wrist and the top of my foot. Todd just got another tattoo (his fourth), which is what got me thinking about it.

For this particular tattoo, I’ve narrowed it down to the underside of the wrist or nape of neck. I’ve looked to Freja (my most favorite model in the whole wide world) as she has…what, like 14 tattoos? She’s most famous for her “float” ink but she also happens to have tattoos in the two spots I am considering. Not too surprising as they are both popular areas. So……I am hemming and hawing, but it would be very small and black.

Enjoying of-the-season nectarines and heirloom tomatoes (I will share my favorite recipes soon). I am generally not a huge tomato person, but come this time of the year, when the heirlooms are at their peak, I am all over them. My favorites are the smaller, slightly tart green tomatoes.

Weekend Away

by Penny on July 11, 2011

Hello hello!

Hope you had a fantastic weekend :-) As I mentioned last week, Todd and I had our first night away from Tate and it was great. As much as we love him, and miss him when he’s not around, it was an amazing feeling to just hang out with each other, talk and talk and talk, have drinks or a meal….SLEEP IN!

We went into SF for a night; on Saturday we went to a Giants game then had dinner. We slept in Sunday, watched the end of that AMAZING World Cup game and then had a super yummy lunch at Slanted Door. We had great weather, and it was very relaxing.

I didn’t take our camera, but snapped some photos with my phone.
