I was hunting on the NPR music site for something entirely different, but I happened upon this and just had to post it on the blog–Todd, and I think he will admit it, has some pretty questionable taste in music. Well, really, he has a really questionable love of current pop. That said, sometimes you just have to pull the stick out of your ass (which, I should mention, NPR listeners have a hard time doing) and have fun, auto-tune be damned.

On a side note…..Lady Gaga’s body is CRAZY…..talk about some 2012 exercise motivation.

Also, go here for some decent music :-)

I’m so excited y’all–I was flipping through the Sept issue of Elle at lunch, and saw that The Rapture came out with a new album this month. YESSSSSS. I love The Rapture! I was obsessed with Sister Savior back in the early 2000′s when I was a little club rat. My old friend who was my city’s resident clapping-hipster-electro DJ used to make me mixes and one had a great remix of this song, a bit more dance-y.

I feel old.

In any case, I’m all over this album.

Also, Radiohead is finally planning a NA tour for next year. I want to take my dad. Last time I saw them was the Hail to the Thief tour and it was awesome. And, Yorke’s album with Atoms For Peace is coming out sometime in the near future, shaka.

Any new music to recommend? I’m always in the market…

Still from Pirate Radio.

I heard a story on NPR last night about an experiment the Domino Records label is trying out. The (aptly named) Domino Radio station will be live in London for one week (you can also listen online here). I am super stoked about this experiment, because I loathe radio and long for more diversity in the medium–iPods and computers and great, but sometimes you just want to tune in, you know? Radio, like trains, feels nostalgic and not at all archaic, at least not to me. The Domino station is tapping their artists (Arctic Monkeys and The Kills among them) to play THEIR favorite tracks and artists. And the artists played are not all represented by Domino (imagine that).

The NPR story spoke about the college radio station surge that’s happened in the states. In Davis, there’s a local college station (KDVS, I believe) that my dad listens to sometimes. This is how he comes to tell me “I heard this new band and I like them, their name is just three exclamation points.”

I’ve always enjoyed discovering music organically, and a radio station that’s tended to by musicians and explores many different genres sounds…really fantastic. I struggle with iTunes and Pandora and Grooveshark–I still feel like I am not hearing a lot that I may love, and I don’t have the time to explore myself. A few years back, I was constantly discovering new bands (often with the help of my friend Kevin, who would give me albums from Bjork to Blackalicious to Radiohead).

In any case, I really love this idea and hope it takes off. Britain has a history of “renegade” radio stations, most notably pirate radio from the 60′s (by the way, I really really recommend that movie). I suppose I will try to find more online radio stations that mimic Domino’s experiment. Unfortunately my very old Volvo has a broken tape deck and lighter so I can’t plug in my iPhone. So, it’s CDs (yes, I still buy them) and…..well, NPR :-)

PS – The week-long stream will be archived with track listings. Horray!

I had totally forgotten about this song!. My friend (and ex-boss) LOVED her album and this song just popped up on my Pandora. I can distinctly remember driving home from SF with him after a long day of store visits and him totally rocking out to this song. We would always sing along loudly to random music, like Astrud Gilberto or the Spring Awakening soundtrack.

So much fun.

In any case, this is a good song to welcome the weekend!

I was on the train ride into work when a Vicious mix shuffled into my iTunes. Vicious was a club night my old friend Shaun hosted in the early 2000s, when hipsterdom was at its peak. Lots of synthpop, vintage, pointy shoes, PBR, ironic tee-shirts, clapping and lack of showering. I never fit in, but I loved it. Nothing made me happier than dancing to dirty electro with my girlfriends. My friend Leanne (one of those best friend types who you rarely see or speak with and it never matters or impacts your connection) was my Dancing Soulmate. Every weekend we’d drive to the club listening to Felix da Housecat’s Excursions, drink whiskey in the parking lot, pay our 5 bucks and dive into a sweat-filled night of dancing. Shaun used to play the Martini Bros. “Favorite Band” for me and Leannie and I would identify the location of Fear & Loathing Guy, some outrageously tall, seemingly drugged out dude who always sported poly bell bottoms and Elvis-style aviators, and usually sat sprawled out on a subwoofer. I’d drink a few vodka Red Bulls and then nurse a Corona (good for dancing, no spills) for the remainder of the night. We’d smoke and make plans with friends to meet the next night at our favorite pub quiz (where I happened to meet Todd). It was so much fun. I miss it.

“Wordy Rappinghood” always reminds me of Leannie, I can clearly still see her dancing to it. Ditto on anything Basement Jaxx. I used to talk so much shit about “Good Luck” (which she loved and I hated) until I found out how much fun it was to rock out to :-)

I was finally able to listen to Charlotte Gainsbourg’s new album, IRM, in its entirety and it’s fabulous. You can sense the Beck influence, but not overly so, and I was pleasantly surprised. I was afraid the album would sound like a Beck LP with Charlotte lending vocals, but it definitely feels like her. They have only made a video for “Heaven Can Wait,” certainly not my favorite song on the album. Below are two of my favorites, “Trick Pony” performed live on Letterman (she’s quite good live!) and the title track, which feels very cool and psychedelic.

Enjoy, and happy weekend!

I was so excited to find this mix on my work computer (I lost all of my music when my iMac crapped out last year), so I had to share. Diplo created the mix for Pitchfork a few years back and I listened to it on repeat two summers ago. It’s crazy good–if you want to download it, go here. Tracklist can be found here.

My favorite bits begin at 12:45, 19:35, 30:40, 43:45 (come on, mixing 90′s R&B and early trance is brills) and at 50:00, the most amazing mix of Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” EVER.

Not sure if you’d be into him? He mixed M.I.A.’s Piracy Funds Terrorism album.
