Todd’s parents are currently in Greece, while he and I are currently en route to Maui. It seems like a lot of people are off to sunny locations all over the globe. So, I have to ask, what is your dream vacation this time of year? Do you head for the beach? Look for something active? Or do you give the finger to tradition and head somewhere chilly?
Do tell….

My “spring” vacation this year was a trip back east to visit home base (Baltimore), as I’m currently ensconced in the wild West. However! Last March, I spent a week in the desert outside Tucson, AZ with one of my friends. It was a fantastic break from the dreariness of March in Maine (where I was living at the time), which tends to be cloudy, damp, cold, and snowy. It was so wonderful to see the sun!
Dream vacation – that’s tough. Around the world trip, perhaps? :) Seriously, for city – would love Italy as I have never been. For beach – Thailand!! But for now, we have Hawaii in May with the kids and possibly a NY trip for the grown ups in August. It will tie me over, until our next trip abroad.
Oooh, desert sounds great. So does Greece. Someplace hot and dry…I feel like I am growing mildew here in London (though, to be fair, the last week has been very sunny!). Lately I am fantasizing about Portugal, or maybe Valencia Spain or Las Canarias… has anyone been? Are the islands nice or cheesy and touristy?
I have been working out in the desert so I would really like something like a beach right now. I have been staring at pictures of Croatia and am starting to save money to go
I love coast lines, so anywhere with a gorgeous coast, whether rocky or beach-like or otherwise, sounds great. Also, I have a desire to visit remote Scandinavian places – I can kind of be a hermit – so I think that the summer is probably a good time to hit up those places when it’s not too cold.
A vacation isn’t really in my budget right now, but I’m DYING to go to India. That, or somewhere in New England, like Portland, ME, or Cape Cod.
Saint Simons Island, Georgia. My whole family has stayed at the King and Prince for four generations.
as long as it’s hot, sunny and beachy, i’m happy. i can usually only take vacation from early november-late february, though, so anything longer than a weekend getaway this time of year is rare for me.
@JD: I spent about 4 days in Valencia a few summers ago and it was amazing. If you haven’t been, I highly recommend it. I had the most amazing seafood paella at this beautiful little restaurant on their main square (if I can come up with the name, I’ll let you know). To this day, it remains the best thing I have ever eaten in my entire life. I would go back to Valencia for that paella alone.

Portland is about a half hour away from where I used to live in Maine…it is a FANTASTIC little city with a terrific waterfront, amazing small shops/shopping districts, and a shockingly diverse food scene. Maine, in my opinion, is at its best for vacations in May and early June (before black fly season and early enough that lobster is still a little cheaper), or late September through October (foliage! and no snow). Unless you want some winter, in which case go for it! It’s a fantastic state and I miss it a lot. I can’t wait for my Memorial Day weekend trip up there!
Just my two cents.
I’ve always wanted to go to Greece and Turkey. Jordan. Western China. I lived in Thailand for a while and traveled to most of the nearby countries and would love to go back…
But I try to avoid anywhere cold, as a rule!
