Get Your Bad-Ass In { Nostalgia }

I was on the train ride into work when a Vicious mix shuffled into my iTunes. Vicious was a club night my old friend Shaun hosted in the early 2000s, when hipsterdom was at its peak. Lots of synthpop, vintage, pointy shoes, PBR, ironic tee-shirts, clapping and lack of showering. I never fit in, but I loved it. Nothing made me happier than dancing to dirty electro with my girlfriends. My friend Leanne (one of those best friend types who you rarely see or speak with and it never matters or impacts your connection) was my Dancing Soulmate. Every weekend we’d drive to the club listening to Felix da Housecat’s Excursions, drink whiskey in the parking lot, pay our 5 bucks and dive into a sweat-filled night of dancing. Shaun used to play the Martini Bros. “Favorite Band” for me and Leannie and I would identify the location of Fear & Loathing Guy, some outrageously tall, seemingly drugged out dude who always sported poly bell bottoms and Elvis-style aviators, and usually sat sprawled out on a subwoofer. I’d drink a few vodka Red Bulls and then nurse a Corona (good for dancing, no spills) for the remainder of the night. We’d smoke and make plans with friends to meet the next night at our favorite pub quiz (where I happened to meet Todd). It was so much fun. I miss it.

“Wordy Rappinghood” always reminds me of Leannie, I can clearly still see her dancing to it. Ditto on anything Basement Jaxx. I used to talk so much shit about “Good Luck” (which she loved and I hated) until I found out how much fun it was to rock out to :-)

You can listen to or download a Vicious mix after the jump.
