I love watching Ed Sullivan videos! Growing up, all the people around me were pretty intense (crazy?) about their musical preferences: my grandma listened tangos and boleros all day long and my dad is a jazz enthusiast, while my clasically-trained pianist mother is surprisingly open to suggestions and recently declared herself a fan of Justin Timberlake (she even bought his two albums. I know.)
Which is probably why my biggest influence in music was actually my uncle (my mom’s younger brother.) He was always listening to The Beatles, The Monkees, The Beach Boys, The Commodores, etc. I remember that he sometimes picked me up from school when my mom couldn’t, and we would drive around running errands for my grandma while listening to Motown tapes (yes, tapes. Don’t judge, it was the 80′s.) Most recently, he’s been sending me e-mails about Groove Armada’s new album.
