Eating At The Office { Munchies }

Raise your hand if you always wished you could be friends with Claudia from The Babysitters Club so you would have full access to her hefty supply of junk food hidden throughout her room.

I was intrigued by a recent question asked by the folks over at The Kitchn. What snacks do you keep at the office?

Like (I would assume) most, I try to keep my snacks on the healthy side. I have two colleagues in close proximity with large jars of peanut M&Ms in their offices, and that’s tempting enough. At the moment I have some roasted cashews and Honey Nut Cheerios, along with many large, empty bottles of Pellegrino. Today I have a sugar-free Red Bull in my bag (I’m tired), as well.

I wish I could say that I keep trail mix and fruit at my desk. I tend to bring my lunch in and I often pick up bags of nuts and my favorite sour gummy bears at the produce market on the drive in.

How about you? Any tips for avoiding the dreaded vending machines? Favorite snacks? Do you find that you eat throughout the day or have firm meals?

I always have granola bars at my desk. I usually bring my lunch to work as well (saves a ton of money!), so sometimes I snack on my lunch throughout the day. I also usually try to keep a jar of raw almonds.

I always bring my lunch, but I love wasabi coated almonds, just the right amount of spiciness, delicious (though a little bit messy) and a perfect snack for when I hit a wall around 3:00.

I tend not to eat at all on days I am in the office; choosing a strict diet of coffee and adderral until I get home and stuff my face nonstop from approximately 7–11 pm. However in an attempt to regulate my eating cycle somewhat just yesterday I virtuously purchased almonds and dried apricots to snack on. I have to admit it helped; we’ll see how long that lasts. However if I was aware of any candy products in my near vicinity I would have no qualms about eating it all fucking day long. I’m soooo not a health nut.

i keep tea and granola bars on hand in my desk drawer. and i don’t keep chocolate on hand (because, well, it would never keep, it would be gone the day i bought it) but the art department has a huge stash of dark chocolate and whenever i’m stressed, i just go to my favorite art director and make sad eyes. works like a charm.

this is what i posted at thekitchn:
in my desk drawer:
- publix salted rice cakes
- redenbacher’s natural microwave popcorn
- mary’s gone crackers
- NUT-rtrition mixed nuts
- emergen-C
- yogi tea (peach detox and throat comfort)

in the mini fridge:
- vlasic baby dill pickles
- mini babybels

in the kitchen cabinet:
- kashi honey puffs
- 2 cans of amy’s soup
___

i too cannot be anywhere near junk or i will binge. in fact, i used to be the “office supply bitch” and could order whatever i wanted from the supply company including chocolate, candy, mints, cookies, etc. my waist line demanded i give up that job – we only have two or three clients per week in the office so i would always end up eating everything within a week of its arrival justifying myself by saying it would all “go bad” if not eaten quickly. “heathier” snacks are better for me. but a coke now and again never hurts.

I always like to have tea on hand, especially pomegranate green tea from Yogi Tea. As for snacks, I am currently obsessed with mixing dried cherries, walnuts and Greek yogurt. But I always love squares of dark chocolate, cashews, hard boiled eggs or any veggie dipped in hummus.

I like…
the little cups of unsweetened fruit puree (baby food I know!)
Kashi muesli bars
little cups of rice pudding (Kozy Shack)
drinkable yogurts

As horrendous as the amount of packaging is for these portioned snacks, it really helps me have just one snack, rather than snacking through an entire bag of something!

I eat lunch, thats about it. Sometimes I’ll have the random bag of candy I grab at the drug store but thats pretty rare. I drink coffee all morning and then switch to diet coke at lunch. I wish I brought in little snacks. I also wish I was one of those super organized people that make all their lunches in advance on Sunday night. Alas…

Roasted Cashews
Roasted Pistachios
Roasted Almonds

I often bring stuff in with me, for munchies later on in the day:
Fruits
Milk
Yogurt
String Cheese

And theres this drawer that has less frequently used stuff:
A box of teabags. (For dipping the the said milk, not for tax protests)
Tang (For when I am running off to the gym right after work)
Popcorn (For when I am working late. If I am going to be the only one working at 8pm, I might as well make it fun.)
I used to keep a tray of chocolates, but not anymore.

I always try to have almonds (roasted, unsalted) on hand, but during deadlines I will admit to grabbing peanut M&Ms and diet cokes from the dreaded vending machines. I also keep instant oatmeal in my file cabinet for breakfast, as I usually don’t have time to eat before work.
