Words cannot describe how thrilled I was to find these (thanks to a commenter via Apartment Therapy). While I use canvas bags for grocery shopping, I’ve always been bothered by the use of plastic bags for produce. I customarily toss most of my produce into my cart loose. However, it’s impossible to do this with certain items, like green beans or mushrooms. I do save those plastic bags for other uses (picking up dog poop or marinating fish, for example), but I would prefer to ditch them all-together.
Eco Bags makes reusable sacks for just this very purpose. You can buy them in various sizes and the price is quite reasonable – approximately $2-5 apiece. What a great idea!
And, if you would rather not spend the money, I am sure you can make these for yourself easily (great DIY project!) or even use purse or shoe bags you no longer use….

This is really cool! I’m perturbed by how many produce bags I throw away, and reducing consumption is a very good thing.
It’s funny–Westport has banned plastic bags from all of its stores, but you can still use the plastic produce bags–I’d love to see subsidized prices on the bags you feature to help offset plastic bag consumption.
oh! Crafts! Drawstring bags are just too easy to make. And muslin cotton is super cheap (so are old, worn t-shirts). What a wonderful idea. And just in time since the sewing machine is coming out of hiding this summer.
Though, if you see me at the local co-op, I’m usually carrying around the produce bags AS my shopping bags. Keeps things organized and separated pretty well – produce in one, herbs in another and grains in a third…
Hey I have been using these bags and they are extremely handy and useful and frees me from the guilt of using the plastic ones…i managed my friends to join in the plastic vendetta and just using these bags…
