Friday Fun – Guess The Decade

by Penny on April 10, 2009

I recently discovered a feature over at Apartment Therapy Chicago.  They feature photographs of various rooms from unknown decades and invite their readers to guess.  I’ve provided a few past examples below, all with my guesses (before checking out the answers) and the answers (highlight with your mouse to read).  I know nothing about interiors, so please forgive me if I get every one wrong!

Damn, this is ugly.  It reads like a really bad 60′s trend.  Maybe 1965?

Answer: 1971

I could live in this room in present day, I think.  In fact, I could see the room being fairly new, but the photograph is grainy.  So, I am going for 1978.

Answer: 1970′s

Definitely 70′s.  It looks like a tiny urban kitchen.  I guess 1974.

Answer: 1960

Retro!  The quality of the photograph, track lighting and appliances give this one away – I say late 90′s.

Answer: 2008

Those chairs are all over the place these days.  But, I am struggling to identify this room.  Again, the lighting makes me think it’s the 80′s.  1985?

Answer: 2008

Looks like Martha Stewart’s kitchen from the 80′s.  1986.

Answer: Late 1980′s

Another example of palm beach retro?  That mirror would be to die for in ANY other room than this one.  I’m guessing 2003.

Answer: 2008

No answer for this room as of yet, but my guess is late 60′s/early 70′s.

How did you do?

I got all of the rooms from the 2000′s and the one room from 1960 (tiny urban kitchen)

I did about the same as you — a few misses. The second room is totally modern-day IKEA! I swear I’ve seen those couches at the local IKEA store…

I love shots like these. I collect old decor books and they are so fun to flip through. It also provides insight about current trends. That lucite table thing – it was so done a few decades ago!
